I saw an experiment about human nature on tv a few days ago. This study was first conducted in the 60s and was recreated in an effort to see if people have changed throughout the last 50 years. The study requires one person, the teacher, to question another person, the learner, and then administer a shock to the learner when they give an incorrect answer. The shocks intensity increase with each wrong answer. Unknown to the teacher, there are no shocks, and the incorrect answers are given in order to see how high they are willing to shock the learner. The teacher is told before the experiment begins they may stop at anytime no questions asked. At one point in the study the learner begs the teacher to stop because it hurts too much and his heart is feeling funny. Here is the whole study, will the teacher stop because they have compassion for the learner? In the background is an actor portraying a Dr. Each time the teacher gets uncomfortable with the shocks this Dr. tells them they must continue. 60% of the teachers continue even after the learner begs for them to quit. 60%! Human nature loses compassion for another's pain when they place themselves under a percieved authority.
The studies both had the same results with 50 years space between. This time the study was changed just a bit. Another "teacher" was brought in, an actor, who sits next to the study subject. This new teacher stops at the point where the learner cries for mercy, and leaves the study. The study subject who is left is then asked to continue. Guess what, they stop. Where before 60% would have continued, now they stop... All because one stood up and said no. My thoughts became,"can I be that "one" for those who are in my realm of influence?" Can I be a leader of righteousness in the face of opposition? My goal.
